Phoenix Price Estimates Run $800 to $1,500. We Priced the Parts.
Every Phoenix price number in circulation traces to a leaker, a 2025 internal target, or the ghost of the Quest Pro. None of them is built from what the headset actually contains. So we built one, from the leaked parts list up.

The range everyone is quoting for Meta’s next headset is $800 to $1,500, and the two ends of that range are not the same kind of number. The $800 comes from a single named source, VR veteran Nima Zeighami, whose November 2025 leak described the puck-tethered device we now know as Phoenix. The $1,500 end is not an estimate at all: it is the launch price of the Quest Pro, the last headset that occupied this slot, which Meta marked down $500 within a year and eventually discontinued. Between them sits a Wall Street Journal report that Meta wanted the device to cost less than $1,000, written in June 2025, before every cost shock of the past fifteen months.
None of those numbers was derived from what Phoenix contains. That is a problem with a fix. Since the September 10 leak of Phoenix’s setup visuals (UploadVR, The Verge), we know more about the parts list than about any unannounced headset in VR history. Below, we price those parts against published bills of materials and today’s component costs, then ask what Meta’s own pricing history says it will charge on top.
Five numbers, three kinds of guess
Lay the circulating estimates on one scale and the pattern is visible immediately: they cluster in two places, and neither cluster is a calculation.

The low end traveled a strange route. Zeighami’s “$800” was about a “Quest 4” that turned out to be Phoenix, and the confusion is telling: aggregators recycled the number for months while attaching it to whichever device name was trending, which is how a single sourced leak hardens into a floor the community now defends. The high end is pure memory. UploadVR’s own tracker notes Phoenix is meant to occupy “a similar high-end position to Meta Quest Pro,” and the top comment on this week’s leak thread says it in three words: “Welcome back Quest Pro.” The Quest Pro launched at $1,499.99, fell to $999.99 in under a year, and left the line. Its price haunts the estimate range even though no one is quoting it as an estimate.
What the leaks say Phoenix contains
Before the math, the parts list, with a confidence grade for each line. The September leak promoted three items from rumor to first-party evidence: nose-pad fit, adjustable lens spacing, and eye tracking (vr.org’s reading of the firmware).

Two things about this list decide the price before we touch a calculator. Phoenix is two pieces of hardware: the puck carries its own silicon, battery, cooling, and enclosure, all of which cost money and none of which is on your head. And Phoenix is a micro-OLED device, which means its most expensive component is the same technology that once killed a headset. Meta canceled La Jolla, its direct Vision Pro competitor, over micro-OLED costs, as CTO Andrew Bosworth later confirmed (via The Verge). Phoenix did not escape that problem. It moved the rest of the headset off your face to afford the panels.
The bill of materials, built from the leak
We priced each block of the device against published anchors. The display anchor is the strongest one available: Omdia’s teardown estimate puts the Vision Pro’s dual micro-OLED set at $456 of a $1,542 total bill of materials. Phoenix’s panels run 2560 × 2560, roughly two-thirds of Vision Pro’s pixel count, sourced from BOE and SeeYa rather than Sony, so we price them slightly below that figure. The other anchor is even more constraining, and we will come back to it.
What Phoenix costs to make, mid scenario

The total lands between $855 and $1,225 depending on panel yields and the puck’s final silicon, with $1,015 in the middle. Now the anchor we promised, because it does more work than any other number in this article. Bigscreen sells the Beyond 2 for $959, and it contains the display half of Phoenix: two 2560 × 2560 micro-OLEDs, pancake optics, a fit system, at 107 grams. What it does not contain is everything else: no processor, no battery, no cameras, no audio, no tracking. It needs a gaming PC and external base stations to do anything. A niche maker prices the display half of this product category at $959 as its entire business. Any Phoenix estimate that implies a total BOM under about $850, let alone an $800 retail price, is pricing a headset that is cheaper than Bigscreen’s screens.
The under-$1,000 target is a 2025 number
The Wall Street Journal’s “less than $1,000” report is real and well sourced. It is also fourteen months old, and the component market moved against it the entire time. Three price shocks have landed since June 2025, and Meta’s own behavior proves the pass-through is real.

There is already a published precedent for how this inflation converts into a sticker price. Valve’s Steam Machine was tracking internally around $750 and launched at $1,049, with the company pointing directly at memory costs. Three hundred dollars of component inflation, moved onto the buyer in one step, at a company with no interest in being expensive. Meta faces the same input prices on a device whose two costliest lines, displays and memory, both got worse since its target was set.
The business case for absorbing those costs vanished in December 2025. In the internal memo Business Insider obtained, Reality Labs leaders Gabriel Aul and Ryan Cairns told staff the division would “be more premium in price going forward, but we’ll have a healthier business to anchor on.” The memo cited tariffs and subsidies as costs the old model carried; the same month, Phoenix slipped from late 2026 to the first half of 2027. The division that would eat a loss to hit $800 lost $6 billion in the fourth quarter of 2025 against $955 million in revenue, and more than $70 billion since 2021. The subsidy era is not paused. It is over, in writing.
What Meta charges per dollar of parts
A BOM is not a price. The multiplier between them is a company decision, and Meta’s history gives us four data points.

Apply those multipliers to the $855–$1,225 BOM band. An $800 retail price implies a BOM around $670 at even a modest 1.2× markup, which is below the retail price of Bigscreen’s display set alone. It is arithmetically dead unless Meta resurrects the subsidy, and the memo says it will not. At the other end, $1,499 requires either a Vision Pro-style 2×+ markup on a device with open-periphery optics and a modest field of view, or the high BOM scenario plus Quest Pro amnesia. Meta spent a $500 price cut learning what $1,499 does to a headset in this slot.
The middle does the arithmetic for us. A $999 sticker requires the low BOM scenario plus disciplined margins. $1,099 to $1,199 covers the mid BOM at roughly 1.1× to 1.2×, which matches a company that says premium and still needs a category to sell into. $1,299 is the mid BOM at 1.3×, or the high BOM at a thin margin. So the credible band is $999 to $1,299, and the center of gravity is $1,099 to $1,199.
What each dollar buys you
Set next to the field, an $1,099–$1,199 Phoenix is neither the bargain the $800 camp hopes for nor the indulgence the $1,500 camp fears. It is the only point on this table where 2560 × 2560 micro-OLED comes with no PC required and under 130 grams on your head.

The row to watch is the one above Phoenix. At $959, the Beyond 2 delivers the same panels and the same weight class and nothing else, and Bigscreen still lowered its price this summer to move volume. If Meta prices Phoenix anywhere near $999, it is giving buyers cameras, audio, a puck, and an entire operating system for the cost of Bigscreen’s screens. That is the argument for the low end of our band. The argument for the high end is the April Quest repricing: Meta has already shown it will put $100 of component inflation on the buyer without blinking.
The range was right. It was attached to the wrong number
Three ranges, one scale

Here is the thing the $800–$1,500 range gets half right. The sticker will land in our band, but the leak itself shows Phoenix has a mandatory second purchase for a majority of its buyers. The nose-pad design leaves no room to wear everyday glasses underneath, and the setup package pairs prescription inserts by QR code with Zenni, whose Quest 3 inserts sell for $49.99. More than 60 percent of adults need vision correction, so for most of the audience the inserts are not an accessory. They are line two of the receipt, at $50 to $100 depending on the prescription.
So the budget answer, if you are planning around a first-half 2027 launch: set aside $1,150 to $1,400 all-in. Do not hold out for $800; it would require Phoenix’s parts to cost less than Bigscreen charges for the screens alone, in a year when memory doubled and Meta raised its own prices twice. And the $1,500 fear is the Quest Pro talking. Phoenix’s real risk is not its price. It is whether a seated, controller-free media headset justifies any price to an audience that bought Quest for room-scale games, which is why Meta is building Griffin separately.
What to watch at Connect
- Whether the puck has a price of its own. If Meta sells Phoenix as headset plus puck at separate prices, the sticker will look lower than the real number. Do the addition on stage one.
- The inserts. Whether Zenni pairing ships at launch, and whether Meta prices them near the Quest’s $49.99. This is the hidden line item for most buyers.
- What “premium” means in dollars. The December memo set the tone; Connect sets the number. Anything under $1,000 means Meta found savings our BOM does not show, most likely in the panels.
- The weight measurement. As our August explainer noted, whether Meta quotes 110 grams with or without strap tells you how the rest of the spec sheet will be read.
If you need a headset before 2027, the April repricing changed that math too: the Quest 3 at $599.99 is now the cheapest full standalone package Meta sells, and it will not get cheaper. If you can wait, the leak cycle says Phoenix gets its full reveal on September 23, and our band says the honest number to watch for is $1,099. Everything else is a leaker’s floor or a ghost.
